Arthritis of Ankle and Foot

Wear and tear in one or more of your joints of foot and ankle is called Arthritis. This not only causes stiffness in joints but also leads to intense pain in these small joints.

In many cases of arthritis, joint deterioration occursprogressively due to which smooth “cushioning” cartilage in joints is gradually lost. As a consequence, the bones rub against each other and trigger episodes of pain. Arthritis can be very distressful and painful that eventually leads to deformities in joints, loss of joint function, and restricted motion.

Arthritis in joints of foot and ankle can arise due to following causes-

  • Osteoarthritis- thinning of protective joint cartilage with ageing
  • After a fracture or injury to foot
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Long standing foot deformities like flat foot
  • Gout

The symptoms of arthritis vary depending upon the joints which are affected. In several cases, an arthritic joint can be inflamed and painful. Usually, pain develops over time, although you can observe sudden onsets. Here are the symptoms-

  • Feeling pain during motion/movement
  • Tenderness and stiffness when pressure is applied to joints
  • Flare up of pain and discomfort while doing vigorous sports activities
  • Joint swelling, redness or warmth
  • Difficulty while walking
  • Increased swelling and pain in the morning, or getting up after resting or sitting

Foot and ankle arthritis can be treated by several non-surgical methods including-

  • Pads or arch supports
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Weight control
  • Custom shoes or orthotics
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injection into affected joint

In severe cases or if non-operative options fail to work, surgery needs to be performed for relief of symptoms. Surgical methods used for the treatment of foot and ankle arthritis include Debridement/ cleaning (arthroscopic or open), Arthrodesis (fusion) and Arthroplasty (replacement).
