Heel Pain- Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendon joins the calf muscles to the heel bone and it runs to the lower leg. Strain to the tendon causes it to inflame leading to Achilles Tendonitis or tendinopathy. As we know, Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in our body; it can endure great force but it is also very susceptible to injury. Achilles tendonitis can arise at the area where the tendon inserts on the heel bone (Insertional) or in the middle of the tendon (non-insertional). It is frequently associated with a bony ledge on the top of the heel bone that irritates the tendon which is called Haglund’s deformity.
Well, whatever the case, keep yourself checked by a reputed doctor to avoid suffering from pain due to Achilles tendonitis.
- Tendonitis may be developed in different ways. Though, some are easy to treat yet it is advisable to be aware of the pain to take the right steps at the right time. Here are some of the causes of Achilles tendinitis in runners:
- No warm-up before going for exercise
- Using worn-out or inappropriate shoes while walking, exercising or running
- Prematurely stair climbing or hill running
- Running on uneven or hard surfaces
- Sudden or intense physical exercises like sprinting
- Tight calf muscles
In addition, Achilles tendonitis can also develop in patents with inflammatory arthropathies like Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as those taking quinolone antibiotics on long term.
If you are observing these symptoms, then it could be due to Achilles Tendon. Have a look-
- Stiffness or weakness in the lower leg
- You may feel sore a few centimeters above where it connects with the heel bone.
- Pain in back of heel or lower leg after doing exercise or running.
- A bony bump at the back of the heel
- Occasionally, at the time of climbing stairs or running, you observe intense pain and discomfort
Usually most of the patients with Achilles tendonitis heal with non-operative treatment modalities, namely, physiotherapy, ice packs, elevating, medications, extracorporeal shock wave therapy. In few cases, surgery may be needed which involves cleaning up of the tendon, removal of bony bump, as well as repair of the tendon. Now a days, many cases of Achilles tendonitis can be done by minimally invasive/ key hole surgery.
Dr. Anuj Chawla is one of the most reputed doctors in Gurugram who is known for giving the best treatment for Achilles Tendonitis. He is one of the few doctors in India who has experience in managing these cases with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy and performing Achilles tendonitis surgery using arthroscopic (key hole) technique.
